to do something lightly, superficially, or not seriously
Timmy dabbled in his chores while thinking about his friends who were playing football down the street. He half-heartedly splashed water on the cars hood to make a good show of effort. As he lightly spattered the car with water, he hoped his dad would think he was taking his work seriously. In reality, Timmy was simply dabbling at washing the car and waiting until his dad turned away; that was when he was going to go join his friends football game.
